From Stress to Strength: Green Girls Platform Launches Eco-Anxiety Project in Salima

From Stress to Strength: Green Girls Platform Launches Eco-Anxiety Project in Salima

In Salima, specifically in T/A Kabumbu 1 village, the cycle of recurrent floods & dry spells isn’t just an agricultural problem, it’s a deep emotional and economic burden, especially for young women and girls. We, at the Green Girls Platform, are thrilled to announce the launch of the Eco-Anxiety Project!

Creating Safe Spaces for Healing and Rebuilding

Over the next three to six months, our goal is clear: to create safe and supportive spaces for 50 girls and young women in the community.

These spaces are vital. They offer a place to recharge, rebuild self-confidence, and process the profound emotional toll that constant climate instability takes on mental health. By addressing this eco-anxiety, we empower participants to shift from feeling overwhelmed to being ready to take decisive climate action.

Beyond Emotion: Equipping Women for Economic Resilience

Emotional support is only half the solution. In a community of hardworking farmers, the ability to thrive economically is the ultimate form of resilience.

That’s why the Eco-Anxiety Project includes a crucial component focused on empowerment: we will be equipping 30 young women with essential business and financial skills. This practical training is designed to give them a real competitive edge before the next farming season even begins. By strengthening their financial foundation, we help safeguard them against the vulnerability that climate-induced poverty often creates.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported us through the Raffle for Resilience and to our key partners, the Global Resilience Fund. Your dedication ensures that these young women and girls are not just surviving climate change, but leading the response to it.

GGP Collective Care

GGP Collective Care

To end the year on a healthy note, the Green Girls Platform team took a trip to Cape Maclear in Mangochi with support from @mamacashfund for “Collective Care”. A healthy staff = a successful organization. The retreat helped the team to get to know each other better by understanding each others weak and strong spots. It also helped the team to reflect on how the year went as far as what our successes were and what we need to do, to do better. With that being said, Green Girls Platform is ready for 2023 and ready to make a bigger impact!

Green Girls Platform engagement with Mitundu Primary School on GBV (Gender Based Violence)

16 days of activism against Gender Based Violence engagement with students from Mitundu Primary School. Green Girls led by the members created a friendly space where the students had discussions around Gender Based Violence, it’s causes and how best young people can engage in combating or overcoming GBV issues. To raise more awareness on GBV, there was a debate that was conducted among the students as a strategy to demand better legal safeguards and services to permanently end violence against girls and women.

Empowering the Next Generation in Mkwinda: A Recap of the E-STEM Project

Empowering the Next Generation in Mkwinda: A Recap of the E-STEM Project

In a vibrant community gathering in Mkwinda, the empowering initiative unfolded as the E-STEM project, in collaboration with Lessons in Conservation, took center stage. Yesterday event served as an impactful educational session aimed at enlightening children on the critical role of E-STEM (Environmental Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in safeguarding our environment.

The collaborative effort between the E-STEM project and Lessons in Conservation brought together a diverse group of enthusiastic kids, eager to learn and engage with the world of environmental science. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as the young minds embarked on a journey of discovery and exploration. Throughout the day, educational activities and interactive sessions were carefully curated to provide the children with a comprehensive understanding of how E-STEM disciplines play a pivotal role in environmental protection. Practical demonstrations, engaging discussions, and hands-on experiments allowed the kids to grasp the significance of incorporating E-STEM principles into their daily lives. Lessons in Conservation, as a key partner, shared valuable insights into the interconnectedness of environmental conservation and STEM fields. The collaborative effort aimed not only to educate but also to inspire the next generation to become stewards of the environment, equipped with the knowledge and skills to make a positive impact.

The success of the event was evident in the bright eyes and enthusiastic participation of the children, who left with a newfound appreciation for E-STEM and its vital role in preserving our natural world. By empowering these young minds with knowledge and fostering a sense of responsibility, the E-STEM project and Lessons in Conservation are sowing the seeds for a future generation that is environmentally conscious and equipped to tackle the challenges of tomorrow. Through their participation, the team not only contributed to the immediate goal of tree restoration but also aligned with the broader vision of creating leisure parks. This endeavor aimed to provide the community with green spaces for relaxation and recreation, fostering a harmonious balance between urban development and environmental preservation. The collective efforts of the team at the Lilongwe City Council's Tree Planting event underscored the importance of community involvement in environmental initiatives. By coming together to restore trees and greenery, the team played a part in shaping a more sustainable and vibrant future for the Area 18 interchange and the surrounding community.
