At the Green Girls Platform, we believe that climate justice begins at the grassroots level. Today, we are thrilled to spotlight Malumbo Mkinga, one of our young women under the Young Women Climate Negotiators Program, who is turning her advocacy into tangible action through her project: Empowering Youth through Sustainable Briquettes Making and Manure Production.

In partnership with the Mzuzu Diocese, Malumbo has mobilized 40 young people from various clubs across Mzuzu to lead their community toward a more resilient future.

The project focuses on two critical challenges facing many Malawian communities:

1. Restoring the Soil with Permaculture Manure
   The training kicked off with a deep dive into the science of the land. Participants explored the devastating link between soil degradation, falling crop yields, and food insecurity.
2. Briquettes: The Clean Energy Alternative
   Malumbo’s project introduces sustainable briquettes made from agricultural waste as a game-changer. These briquettes significantly reduce the need for firewood and charcoal, helping to curb deforestation. On top of that they offer a low-cost alternative for households, putting money back into the pockets of local families.

As we approach Earth Day, Malumbo’s leadership serves as a reminder that the youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are the innovators of today. These 40 young participants are gaining more than just technical skills; they are building the foundation for sustainable livelihoods that will support their families and protect our environment for generations to come.

We applaud Malumbo for her dedication to the community and her commitment to the principles of climate justice. Her work reminds us that when we empower young women to lead, the entire community thrives.

At Green Girls Platform, we believe that those most affected by the climate crisis should be at the forefront of the solution. This week, we are thrilled to announce the official launch of the Her Resilience, Her Power Project in Nkhotakota District. Supported by the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), this three-month initiative is specifically designed to support 50 girls and young women from Mbuna Village in Dwangwa.

Turning Eco-Anxiety into Action
Living on the frontlines of environmental change often brings a heavy emotional burden. Many young women living in such communities experience eco-anxiety and the “Her Resilience, Her Power” project is designed to tackle this head on by:

1. Creating Safe Spaces: Providing a platform where young women can share their experiences and recharge emotionally.
2. Building Technical Knowledge: Equipping participants with a solid foundation in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and climate resilience.
3. Fostering Leadership: Training the next generation of climate advocates to lead their communities in sustainable environmental action.

We are confident that by working hand-in-hand with local leadership, we can create a sustainable model for empowerment. Over the next three months, we aren’t just teaching climate science; we are building a movement of resilient leaders who can navigate and mitigate the challenges of a changing world.

At Green Girls Platform, we believe that leadership and teamwork shouldn’t stop when the final whistle blows. On April 16th, 2026, our Green Basketball Team stepped off the court and into action, partnering with CEZOBAL for a dedicated cleanup drive at the Kamuzu Institute for Sports basketball court.

This initiative marks the first of many climate-focused projects our team has planned for the year. By clearing litter and restoring the space where we play, our athletes are proving that sports can be a powerful vehicle for environmental stewardship. We are incredibly proud to see our players taking ownership of their community and encouraging the wider basketball family to do the same.

Innovating for Planet Earth
This cleanup serves as the perfect buildup to our Earth Day celebrations on April 22nd. This year, we are moving under the theme “Innovate for Planet Earth,” a call to action that emphasizes the need for creative and sustainable solutions to our environmental challenges.

Our commitment goes beyond a single day of service; we are dedicated to fostering a culture of innovation among young people in Malawi. Whether it is through sports or community engagement, we believe that when youth are empowered to innovate, they become the ultimate catalysts for climate action.

On the 31st of March 2026, the streets were filled with a powerful energy as Malawi’s youth marched in solidarity for a future that is no longer negotiable. For too long, climate policies have lived on paper with very little impact felt by the communities on the front lines.

Malawi remains one of the most climate-vulnerable nations in the world, yet our national responses continue to be largely reactive. We are tired of waiting for the next disaster to strike before action is taken. We believe it is time to shift from crisis management to genuine prevention and long-term resilience.

A Unified Voice for Change
This is why the Green Girls Platform joined forces with a coalition of youth-led organizations to demand more. Organized by the Clean Cities Project in collaboration with Green Children, Action Aid, Point of Progress, and other dedicated local partners, the Climate Justice March was a testament to the power of collaboration.

Together, we took our message directly to the decision-makers. We officially presented our petition to the Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources and Climate Change, centering our demands on three critical pillars: Structural Policy Reform Sustained Accountability and Stronger Climate Investment

We demand climate justice, and we want it now!

The Green Girls Platform proudly hosted the Climate Justice for Her Workshop under the theme “Building Climate Negotiators Across Generations” at Kumudzi Centre, Lilongwe, an empowering space where voices, courage, and leadership came together. Through our E-STEM for Climate Action Project, funded by Trócaire Malawi, we brought together 10 girls from Bunda Primary, Kambewe Primary, and Chiseka CDSS, linking them with mentors from our Young Women Group of Climate Negotiators Programme.

This intergenerational exchange was intentional, recognizing that the climate challenges we face today span generations and the solutions must also be intergenerational.

The workshop featured sessions on climate justice, climate negotiations, and a negotiation simulation exercise. During the mock negotiations, the girls stepped into real negotiation spaces, gaining hands-on experience of how climate negotiations work, building confidence, and boldly articulating climate justice issues that directly affect their lives and communities.

The girls and young women were not just participants; they negotiated, challenged, and led! This is how leadership is nurtured! This is how confidence is built! And this is how climate negotiations become inclusive, representative, and transformative!

Climate Leadership Starts Here! We are so excited to watch these incredible young negotiators grow and shape a just and sustainable future for all.

In Salima, specifically in T/A Kabumbu 1 village, the cycle of recurrent floods & dry spells isn’t just an agricultural problem, it’s a deep emotional and economic burden, especially for young women and girls. We, at the Green Girls Platform, are thrilled to announce the launch of the Eco-Anxiety Project!

Creating Safe Spaces for Healing and Rebuilding

Over the next three to six months, our goal is clear: to create safe and supportive spaces for 50 girls and young women in the community.

These spaces are vital. They offer a place to recharge, rebuild self-confidence, and process the profound emotional toll that constant climate instability takes on mental health. By addressing this eco-anxiety, we empower participants to shift from feeling overwhelmed to being ready to take decisive climate action.

Beyond Emotion: Equipping Women for Economic Resilience

Emotional support is only half the solution. In a community of hardworking farmers, the ability to thrive economically is the ultimate form of resilience.

That’s why the Eco-Anxiety Project includes a crucial component focused on empowerment: we will be equipping 30 young women with essential business and financial skills. This practical training is designed to give them a real competitive edge before the next farming season even begins. By strengthening their financial foundation, we help safeguard them against the vulnerability that climate-induced poverty often creates.

16 days of activism against Gender Based Violence engagement with students from Mitundu Primary School. Green Girls led by the members created a friendly space where the students had discussions around Gender Based Violence, it’s causes and how best young people can engage in combating or overcoming GBV issues. To raise more awareness on GBV, there was a debate that was conducted among the students as a strategy to demand better legal safeguards and services to permanently end violence against girls and women.
