Kauma Tree Planting

For years Kauma Primary School in Lilongwe, Malawi, has been a textbook example of deforestation and mismanagement of trees on an academic level.

Regarded as having one of the worst records in the city, the primary school was identified by the Ministry of Education as a candidate for a program to revitalize green spaces.

About 6,000 trees need to be planted at the school to salvage and restore the land to its original glory. Early in February, Green Girls Platform launched an online fundraiser called “Donate a Tree Raffle Draw.”

The project far exceeded its intended goal of purchasing 1,000 seedlings, which would go towards Kauma Primary School. 82,000 Malawian Kwacha was raised, giving organizers a boost of 200 seedlings on top of their 1,000 targets.

Dedicated students with Kauma school’s wildlife club have now been entrusted with the daily management and survival of the recently planted trees.
